Invariable demands when laying bricks in winter time
- Plan winter brick lying in advance
- Always use dry bricks
- Do not use quarry tile burned bricks unless the brickwork is covered and heated, so that the temperature does not fall below 5 degrees
- If it is possible, remove the wrapping foil from the bricks or remove the foil at the top
- Cover the bricks with winter mats or place them in a tent immediate after reception
- Cover and protect the mortar against the weather immediate after reception
- Cover and protect the cement against moisture immediate after reception
- Use up to 80 degree hot water in the mortar in periods where the outside weather is below 5 degrees
- Or add ethanol to the mortar in periods with temperatures under 5 degrees. Minimum 1 liter and maximum 4 liters, of ethanol per 100 liter mortar. Only add ethanol to mortar with maximum 55% cement of the combined binding material amount. Do not add to mortar that is factory produced, unless the producer tells you otherwise.
- Insulate brick tubs at low temperatures
- Always keep the brickwork covered during the entire building process - when not building
- Do not acid-wash in periods with frost
- Remove snow from storey floor
- Keep water on floor away from the brickwork
- When after jointing, secure that the brickwork has an absorbing ability, so that the joint mortars water content goes below 7% in weight, before ice is formed in the mortar
